Armenian MP Vahe Galumyan has offered a land swap with neigbouring Azerbaijan amidst the cross-border violence that has intensified in recent weeks, Newsarmenia reported.

Galumyan said that there are Azerbaijani lands under control of Armenia in Tavush region and Armenian in lands in Azerbaijan that can be swapped. The MP did not however clarify which Armenian lands are in Azerbaijan.

“I don’t exclude that they can be swapped. I think there is a problem that can be solved,” the MP said.

Speaking about the cross-border shooting with Azerbaijan, Galumyan said that a commission must be set up for demarcation and the delimitation of the border.

Galumyan also said that the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) might be involved in the border conflict with Azerbaijan.

Earlier, the Armenian Defence Ministry announced that Russian troops would be stationed along the Tavush region and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia was considering stationing Russian troops along the border with Azerbaijan.

The situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border has been tense since the end of last year’s war that saw Azerbaijan liberate most of Nagorno-Karabkah region and the surrounding regions from the three decades of occupation. The two countries have not agreed on the demarcation of their joint border since they gained independence in the early 1990s.
