The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry on June 11 reported that its positions came under Armenia’s regular fire near border Kalbajar region.
“On June 11, from 17:00 to 17:30, Armenian armed forces stationed in Vardenis region using small arms subjected to fire the positions of the Azerbaijan Army stationed in the direction of Ashagi Ayrim settlement of Kalbajar region,” the ministry said.
Earlier on the same day, the ministry reported that Armenian forces in Vardenis region fired at Azerbaijan positions in Kalbajar using small arms starting from 1345.
The ministry said that there were no casualties and that the operational situation was under Azerbaijan’s control.
The Armenia Defence Ministry denied Azerbaijani reports about the attack, saying that Armenia stopped Azerbaijan from carrying out technical work near Gegarkunik region’s Kut village on the border.
The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry described the incident as Yerevan’s attempt to intensify the situation ahead of the upcoming elections in Armenia.
Armenia’s Gegarkunik region borders Azerbijan’s Kalbajar region that was recently liberated from the occupation.
The situation on the border has been tense since the end of last year’s war that saw Azerbaijan liberate most of Nagorno-Karabkah region and the surrounding regions from the three decades of occupation. The two countries have not agreed on the demarcation of their joint border since they gained independence in the early 1990s.
