Azerbaijan tried 13 more members of an Armenian armed group that had crossed its state border in December in violation of the November 10 statement.
The statement signed following the six-week hostilities had stipulated that the Armenian soldiers be withdrawn from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
A court in Baku on July 23 sentenced the group members to six years in jail each on charges of illegal crossing of the state border and illegal weapon possession.
The group members initially faced charges that include committing acts of terrorism, sabotage and other criminal acts against Azerbaijani civilians and servicemen. However, during the court procession the prosecutor asked that these charges against the defendants be dropped.
The group members are among 62 Armenian soldiers who crossed the Azerbaijani border in Hadrut back in December and are being tried in Baku in groups.
Azerbaijan also on June 14 sentenced Lebanese citizen of Armenian Vicken Euljekjian to 20 years in prison on charges including terrorism and mercenary activity. According to the testimony of Euljekjian’s partner, Maral Najaryan he was paid over $2,000 a month to fight for the Armenian side during the war.
It should be noted that on June 12, Azerbaijan swapped 15 Armenian prisoners for a map detailing the location of landmines in formerly-occupied Aghdam city.
Another 15 Armenian soldiers were handed over on July 2 in exchange of maps of about 92,000 anti-tank and anti-personnel mines planted during the occupation in Fuzuli and Zangilan regions.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry described the return of the ex-convicts as a “humanistic step”.
