Azerbaijani MP detained in abuse of power case

A court in Baku’s Binagadi district today chose preventive measure against Eldaniz Salimov in the form of detention for three months.

Salimov faces charge of abuse of power for attacking a police officer.

Salimov was summoned to the court today after Prosecutor-General’s Office launched a criminal case against him on charge of abuse of power.

On the same day, the Azerbaijani parliament revoked Salimov’s immunity upon request from Prosecutor-General Kamran Aliyev who addressed the Parliament’s extraordinary session. The Parliament terminated Eldaniz Salimov’s parliamentary immunity with 98 votes.

Salimov is charged under abuse of power for applying physical violence against a police officer who was on duty on July 29 at a restaurant in Khachmaz city. Salimov beat the police officer who urged him to comply with norms of the quarantine regime.
