Baku earlier announced that companies from friendly countries would be involved in the reconstruction work.

Azerbaijan has invited the US to participate in the restoration work carried in and around Nagorno-Karabakh region following the last year’s war with Armenia.

In a letter sent to Joe Biden on the occasion of the US Independence Day, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said: “Restoration and development works are presently underway across the liberated territories. We would like to see also American companies as our partners in that process.”

Aliyev also said that the US “may contribute significantly to forging lasting peace and atmosphere of trust between Azerbaijan and Armenia” based on mutual respect to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and inviolability of borders”.

The present stressed that favorable ground has emerged for lasting peace, economic revival and regional cooperation following the end of the war in autumn 2020.

The war that lasted from September 27 and November 10, saw Azerbaijan regain control over its territories occupied during the war in the early 1990s.

Touching upon the ties with Washington, Aliyev said that “large-scale energy projects, reinforcement of international peace and security, combating terrorism and close cooperation within the NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan are the essential areas that characterize Azerbaijan-U.S. relations.”

The US seems to have increased its presence in the South Caucasus region since Joe Biden’s election last year.

On May 24, Biden sent a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to congratulate him on the Republic Day and to express Washington’s commitment to help Baku and Yerevan to negotiate over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

He also praised Azerbaijan’s role in contributing to Europe’s energy security.

A few days before Biden’s statement, Aliyev expressed his country’s interest in military cooperation with the US, adding that Azerbaijan, as a strategic partner, is ready for an active work and the expansion of cooperation.

The strengthening of Baku-Washington ties was also discussed during the phone called between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Aliyev in late April. Blinken reminded during the conversation that the waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, that bans direct US aid to Azerbaijan, was extended this year too.
