Baku summons Russian envoy over MP’s anti-Azerbaijani remarks

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry on August 1 summoned the Russian envoy over anti-Azerbaijani remarks made by controversial Russian MP Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

During the meeting with the Russian envoy, the ministry officials described Zhirinovsky’s remarks as “unethical” and also incompatible with the spirit of friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries.

The ministry said that such |irresponsible and provocative” statements are aimed at damaging these relations.

Speaking at Itogi with Zhirinovsky (Outcome with Zhirinovsky) show on July 30 on Russia’s Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, Zhirinovsky criticized Azerbaijan for the treatment of Russian peacekeepers deployed in the Nagorno-Karabah region following the Russian-brokered November statement that ended the war with Armenia.

The Russian MP went after President Ilham Aliyev personally.

Reminding that South Caucasus is “in the sphere of influence” of Moscow, Zhirinovsky said that had it not been for Russia, US President Joe Biden would have overthrown Ilham Aliyev within two weeks.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky is know for his controversial statements and his anti-Azerbaijani sentiments.
