Azerbaijan’s Presidential Aide Hikmat Hajiyev has said that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with neighoburing Armenia is over and the main task facing Baku is restoration of liberated lands and ensuring safe return of IDPs to their homes.

Hajiyev made the remarks on the 1st anniversary of the Tovuz clashes with Armenia that claimed lives of 15 servicemen from both sides. The clashes had prompted a pro-war rally in Baku where thousands of protesters called on the government to start military operations to regain control over the territories lost to Armenia in the war in the early 1990s.

Commenting on Tovuz incidents, Hajiyev described it as “another provocation by Armenia” on Azerbaijan’s border Tovuz district through which Azerbaijan’s major energy infrastructure goes.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Week of Diplomacy entitled “44-day Karabakh war and post-war foreign policy of Azerbaijan, Hajiyev said that “the Azerbaijani Armed Forces gave a worthy rebuff to all military provocations of the Armenian Armed Forces”.

The assistant to the president stressed that Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, which is based on national interests, will continue to serve to ensure international law, peace and security in the region and worldwide.
