Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that Russia is ready to welcome the European Union’s mediation in talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, provided they help implement the existing agreements.

Commenting on the statements from EU members about plans to join the trilateral talks on Nagorno-Karabakh, Peskov said: “If mediation efforts bring stability and predictability, and facilitate the implementation of the existing agreements, they should be welcome. On the whole, work in this direction is going well.”

Peskov recalled that the trilateral agreement between the Russian, Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders was reached with the active engagement of Vladimir Putin, adding that the latter maintains contact with both countries’ leaders.

It should be noted that the post-war situation was recently discussed during Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Moscow on July 20.

The Russian-brokered peace deal signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia on November 10 ended the six-week-war that saw Azerbaijan liberate most of its previously-occupied territories in and around Nagorno-Karabakh.

Under the peace deal, 2,000-strong Russian peacekeepers were deployed to the line of contact and along the Lachin Corridor. The deal also stipulated the unblocking of the transport and trade connections in the region.
