Shahriyar Mammadyarov has finished 1st in the 2021 Superbet Chess Classic, becoming the first Azerbaijani grandmaster to win a Grand Chess Tour event.
He finished with 6.0/9 points, leaving behind Levon Aronian, Wesley So, and Alexander Grischuk, who each drew their last-round games to finish with 5.0/9.
The win earns Mammadyarov a first-place prize of $90,000 and a total of 13 Grand Chess Tour points.
He won Armenian Levon Aronian in Round 6 and also defeated Italy’s Fabiano Caruana.
Another national grandmaster Teymur Radjabov shared 5-6 places with 4.5 points.
The first tournament of the Grand Chess Tour series was held in Bucharest, Romania. The next competitions will be in rapid and blitz – in Paris (June 16-23), Zagreb (July 5-12) and St. Louis (August 9-16). The classical chess tournament will also take place in St. Louis on August 16-28.
Mammadyarov is a three-fold European Team Champion and gold medalist at the 2012 Chess Olympiad on the third board.
