Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry said the blast at the Caspian Sea might have been caused by volcano eruption.

SOCAR (the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) has denied an explosion at an oil platform in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

No accidents have occurred on offshore platforms and industrial facilities under the direct control of SOCAR, head of SOCAR’s public relations department Ibrahim Akhmedov wrote in his Facebook page on July 4.

The statement comes after a strong blast that was followed by a strong fire at night on July 4.

In the meantime, Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry stated that the explosion might have been caused by eruption of a volcano, adding that the investigation is underway.

Earlier, the local media sited unofficial reports as saying that the explosion took place at the Umid field. Another report alleged that the “Gum Adasy” platform was on fire. Both fields are located tens of kilometers from capital Baku.
