Russian border guards will defend Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan.
The Armenian Defence Minstry said on August 6 that Russia border guards were stationed in Tavush region on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.
The ministry said that the stationing of troops was in line with the “Armenian-Russian partnership”. Infrastructure work is also underway in the region to accommodation Russian troops, the ministry said.
Earlier, Russia sent its troops to Armenia’s Syunik Zangazur in Azerbaijani) on the broder with Azerbaijan.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on July 29 proposed that Russian border outposts be stationed along the length of Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan after a rise in tensions between Yerevan and Baku amid the cross-border clashes between the two countries.
He said that the move would help the demarcation process on the border with Azerbaijan.
He also offered the stationing of monitors from the Russian-led Collective Security Treat Organization [CSTO] of which Armenia is a member, along the border with Azerbaijan. He accused Baku of discrediting the CSTO.
Experts believe that Pashinyan’s call is an attempt to drag the military bloc into the cross-border clashes and to disguise Armenia’s military provocations.
Russian border guards have been defending Armenia’s border with Turkey and Iran since 1992.
It should be noted that the official borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan have not been demarcated since the two countries won independence from the Soviet Union back in the early 1990s.
Some experts believe that Russia’s stationing of troops on the line of contact legitimates the borders between the two countries.
