Armenia’s acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won the country’s first post-war parliamentary elections on June 21.
Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party won 53.92 percent of the votes during the Sunday’s election, while the opposition alliance led by former President Robert Kocharyan received only 21 percent of votes, according to the country’s election commission.
Kocharyan has disputed the election results, citing numerous reports of electoral violations.
The snap election was called by Pashinyan to renew his mandate after thousands of protesters demanded his resignation in November due to the country’s devastating defeat in the war with neighbouring Azerbaijan.
The six-week-war ended with Azerbaijan’s regaining control over most of its territories in and around Nagorno-Karabakh region that had been under occupation of Armenian forces since 1990s.
Pashinyan has been criticized in Armenia for signing the Russian-brokered trilateral statement that stipulated the return of Azerbaijan’s Kalbajar, Lachin and Aghdam regions.
