Baku described the attack on Nakhchivan as Armenia’s attempt to disrupt fragile peace in region.
Azerbaijan on July 14 said that its soldier was injured in Armenian fire in the Nakhchivan exclave in violation of the peace deal that ended the war between the two South Caucasus republics in autumn 2020.
The Defence Ministry reported that Armenian forces opened fire using various caliber weapons at Azerbaijani positions in Nakhchivan’s Sadarak region at 10:00 (GMT+4) on July 14.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry described the incident as Armenia’s attempt to “destroy the fragile peace in the region”. The ministry said that Armenia’s “destructive” approach was unacceptable at a time when Azerbaijan is taking steps to ensure peace, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region.
Azerbaijan suppressed the Armenian attack in response fire, the Defence Ministry said, adding that the situation was now under Azerbaijan’s control.
The Armenian Defence denied Azerbaijan’s accusations of cease-fire violation and said that its soldier was killed on the border with Azerbaijan. Yerevan said Azerbaijan sought to carry out engineering work “to move its positions forward” on the border.
Azerbaijan had reported another cease-fire violation by Armenia a day earlier in its newly-liberated Shusha city. The ministry said that Armenian armed detachments fired at Azerbaijani positions using assault rifles and machine guns from the territory where Russian peacekeepers have been stationed.
