Turkey has discovered a new 135 billion cubic meter natural gas reserve in Black Sea region’s northern Zonguldak province.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the discovery on June 4. The new discovery in Amasra-1 well brought Turkey’s natural gas reserves in Black Sea to 540 bcm. “Our Fatih drill ship has made a new natural gas discovery of 135 billion cubic meters in the Amasra-1 well in the Sakarya Gas Field,” Erdogan said in Zonguldak.

He also unveiled the plans to bring natural gas from the sea to land in three stages. Turkey has stepped up exploration for hydrocarbons off its coast in recent years. Last year, Turkey discovered its biggest gas field with 405 bcm of natural gas in western Black Sea region.

According to head of International Energy Agency Fatih Birol, potential economic value of Turkey’s discovery was around $80 billion.
